captain mayhems revenge escpae room review

Mind Bender's Captain Mayhem's Escape Room is one of the easier rooms in Jacksonville, Florida. It has fun theme with a Goonies feel. This is the best room in Jacksonville for new players. It is also conveniently located near engine 13. From the beginning you are challenged by Captain Mayham to try to turn on the lights. It is a very popular room to the point they have a hard time keeping the room properly ventilated.

Story: Captain Mayhem is one of the most notorious and feared pirates in history. In 1636, leading a band of scoundrels, he set sail on The Revenge. Over the centuries, explorers have searched for The Revenge and its long lost treasure. Recently, an unidentified 17th century ship was discovered by amateur explorers. Their wild tale of an encounter with a blood-thirsty pirate captain was quickly dismissed.

Upon examining the wreckage, you realize something’s not right. Suddenly, you’re trapped! It’s the ghost of Captain Mayhem. Jack The Ripper Escape Room Review

Price: $30 per Person
Difficulty: Expert
Jack The Ripper Escape Room Review

Jack The Ripper Escape Room had a great concept that didn't live up to the potential. This room has a couple of puzzles that are not hard to figure out but very hard to complete. You will have hearing issues as a puzzle attempts to maintain the period but leads to confusion in completion of the puzzle. The other major issue is a puzzle that requires a certain level of hand dexterity that not many have.

Story:  On November 9, 1888, Mary Jane Kelly’s lifeless body was found on the east end of London. It’s widely believed that she was the last victim of the notorious murderer, Jack the Ripper, who terrorized the streets of Whitechapel. Detectives worked tirelessly to solve the mystery and arrest the killer, but to no avail. The man responsible for these atrocious crimes was never brought to justice.

No one ever thought he would ever resurface…until today! Over 30 years after the slayings another vicious murder has rocked the streets of London. The remains of a woman were discovered last night in a back alley.

Eerily similar to the previous crimes, an anonymous letter reached Scotland Yard this morning. The letter announces the return of Jack the Ripper, whereby he promises to embark on another series of heinous murders. But, there is one piece of information in the letter the police haven’t released to the public. Familiar with your past involvement in these investigations, Jack specifically threatens to come after YOU!

Being an authority on these infamous crimes and your past work as a detective, Scotland Yard calls reopens the case and calls upon you. Armed with the letter and old evidence that was gathered from 1888, you need to work quickly to finally solve the clues and puzzles and uncover the true identity of the ripper within the hour before he kills again and makes you his next victim?

Immersion: This is an outlier for Mind Bender Escape Games. The puzzles they used for an 1800s room included a brand new bike and electronic coffee maker. The walls are plain and very underwhelming.

Game Style: Detective

Game Flow: The game flow is not the best. As you go through the room you will run into some major choke points. One choke point is so obstructive that it will literally have everyone standing around one person trying to complete a physical challenge.

Puzzles: The puzzles were okay. Unfortunately, that's all the praise I can offer. No puzzle was fantastic or made this room particularly memorable.

Game Master: Of the two game masters the first was unable to stay in character for the full duration of the room, breaking the established feeling of immersion. The game masters call the participants via phone to provide information. This mechanism, while unique, actually obstructs communication as only one person can use the phone at a time. This being the case, different members of a team may hear a clue differently when given by the game master. Also the decision to come into the room in an effort to fix an effort to fix an error with a puzzle without stopping the time hurt the competitive nature of the room.

The 2nd game master was much better but provided too much information and a few clues not requested.

Immersion: This room sets a standard for immersion. We felt like we were waiting in desolate woods in front of a dilapidated cabin. All the props kept a consistent flow immersion feeling the entire time.

Game Style: Escape/Serial Killer

Game Flow: The game flow is intense as you are thinking about the next step or scare the entire time.

Puzzles: The rooms puzzles are very good and rather simple. If the room had one thing against it the puzzles are not super unique but great nonetheless.

Game Master: The Game Master is very involved in this game the entire time. They must stay on it as they have a role in the room. You will see the role immediately when you start the room and throughout the rest of the room.
