Grande Royal Escape Room Review St. Augustine

Grande Royal Escape in St. Augustine, Florida is a locally-based Escape Room and the first one to be created in St. Augustine. They are located in the heart of the historic portion of the city right across the street from Flagler College. The Grande Royal Escape is home to three Escape Rooms: When Words Fail- Spy Escape, R.A.I.N Corp- Zombie Escape, and Night Train 1892- Jewel Heist.

Grande Royal Escape uses similar puzzles and props throughout all of their rooms. Traditional Escape Room rules do not seem to apply to a couple of the rooms, for instance, moving large furniture or literally getting your hands dirty. The rooms are simple and contain many items that do not become part of the game. For people not familiar with Escape Rooms, these rooms provide a fun game, however, for a more seasoned player, these rooms may leave you more on the disappointed side.

BOOK THIS ROOM

When Words Fail- Spy Escape Room is set in the home of your friend, Agent Brimby. However, you may not know your friend as well as you might have thought, hence the sneaking around his study to prove or disprove his innocence. The room looks nice, but the game doesn’t fit the objective. There is no real build in the anticipation of completion and at times, you are not really sure what you are trying to solve. There is a bit of a search to find all the items needed to complete the room, including finding objects in exchange for clues. None of the puzzles are that difficult. There is some prior knowledge needed to complete one of the puzzles.  The room was mediocre and felt anticlimactic at the end.

Story: In these uncertain times, governments are scrambling to ensure the loyalty of patriots who serve them. Great Britain is no exception. So, when nuclear codes turn up missing it becomes the mission of the OO's to investigate themselves. Starting with OO45 Agent Brimby, your colleague and friend who the codes disappeared under. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to infiltrate Brimby's home and determine his guilt or innocence without being detected. It's dangerous, it's of vital importance, and there's no guarantee of survival. In other words, it's just another day on the job for the world's elite covert spies.

When Words Fail-Spy Escape Room

Immersion: The immersion is close to being good but some short cuts in design lead to a player falling from the story line.

Game Style: Adventure

Game Flow:  The game flows in quick spurts and some of the puzzles do not connect.  With any experience, this game moves very fast.

Puzzles: The puzzles are simple and most of the room is search and find. The puzzles contain little cleverness and don’t really feel as if a super spy would set them up to deter intruders.

Game Master: The Game Master was not an integral part of the experience, but she was enthusiastic.

Group Size Suggestion:  2-4

Final Thoughts: Remember, traditional rules of Escape Rooms do not really apply in this room, so hopefully someone on your team doesn’t believe in safety!

BOOK THIS ROOM

The R.A.I.N. Corps- Zombie Escape Room is set in a security office. Your objective is to find a cure to a Zombie virus, but the scenario doesn’t really fit the story, for instance, you are the Lead Security Team and the cure was hidden in your break room? The Escape Crusaders assumed that Zombies were already a “thing” and that the reason why you want the power to remain on is so that those infected stay on the other side of the fence… But according to the story, we don’t know anything about that impending doom. Good thing, we were prepared for the worst!

Story: Since the 1970's R.A.I.N. CORP. has developed cures and treatments for everything from Ebola to Swine Flu. It's your first day on the job and you are stoked about your position as Lead Security Officer for the facility. You push the mysterious disappearance of the previous Lead Security Officer out of your mind as you prep for the large system of thunderstorms headed your way. You are uncertain why the company has expressed the importance of the power remaining on but with a private power station and a backup generator what could go wrong?

R.A.I.N. Corp Escape Room Review

R.A.I.N. Corp Escape Room Review

Immersion: The immersion is lacking in this room. You are in a very minimal room that contains only a few items that actually lend to the story. There is also a lot of items in this room that do not assist in your escape. There were many things broken and elements of the room showed quite a bit of ware.  This room could use some TLC.

Game Style: Adventure

Game Flow: The flow of the game is slow and clunky. There is not much in the room that keeps you moving on a steady pace.

Puzzles: The puzzles within this game are not original and do not add to the immersion. One of the puzzles uses objects that may lead to you getting your hands dirty.

Game Master: The Game Master should be watching the entire time but at one point the story allows the Game Master to step away from the game when you may need a clue to continue moving forward. Radio silence. Why?!

Group Size Suggestion:  2-4

Final Thoughts: Although it doesn’t state in the story, you are there to escape with the cure… So pay close attention as you get close to escaping!
